Alpha fetoprotein (AFP)

Alpha fetoprotein (AFP) is a glycoprotein,a fetal globulin containing about 3% sugar and the molecular weight is about70000. The AFP protein usually and mainly comes from embryo stem cell, and itcan disappear from the blood about two weeks after birth, so normally AFPprotein is little in blood serum, less than 20mg/ml. When the hepatocellularcarcinomaoccurs, this protein is produced again. AFP increases rapidly in the serumfollowing the disease deteriorated. AFP has become a specific clinical index ofthe diagnosis of primary liver cancer.
